Every product in this category uses the same three words — theta, binaural, entrainment — and almost none of them explain what those words mean. Here's the plain-English version, including the parts the sales pages leave out.
When you attach EEG electrodes to someone's scalp, you record electrical activity from large populations of neurons firing in loose synchrony. That activity has rhythm, and researchers sort those rhythms into frequency bands by cycles per second (Hz).

Here is the part that matters, and that marketing consistently blurs: these bands describe states, they don't create them. Theta activity showing up when someone is in a relaxed, drifting, insight-prone state does not mean that producing theta rhythms in someone causes that state. The arrow of causation is genuinely unsettled, and it is the entire hinge on which these products rest.
Play a 200 Hz tone into the left ear and a 207 Hz tone into the right. Neither ear hears a 7 Hz sound — 7 Hz is far below the range of human hearing. But the auditory system processes the two inputs together, and you perceive a slow pulsing "wobble" at the 7 Hz difference frequency.
That perceived 7 Hz pulse is the binaural beat. It exists in your processing of the sound, not in the sound itself. Three consequences follow directly:
Two nearby alternatives. Isochronic tones are a single tone switched rapidly on and off at the target rate — no stereo separation needed, so they work through speakers, but many people find them harsher. Monaural beats mix the two tones before delivery. Products often blend all three under ambient music, which is why a track can sound like nothing more than pleasant background sound.
Entrainment is the hypothesis that exposing the brain to a rhythmic stimulus nudges neural activity toward that same rhythm. It's a real phenomenon in some contexts — rhythmic visual flicker demonstrably drives visual cortex activity. Whether an audio beat produces meaningful, sustained shifts in broad cognitive state is a much larger claim.
Studies on binaural beats exist and some report reduced self-rated anxiety and improved sustained attention. But the field is characterized by small samples, inconsistent protocols, weak or absent blinding, and mixed replication. Meta-analyses have generally landed on "small effects, low certainty."
There is also a plain explanation that competes well: sitting still for ten minutes with headphones on and no phone in your hand is itself a calming, attention-restoring act. Whether the beat adds anything on top of that is exactly what the research struggles to isolate — and it's worth noting that it may not need to. If the habit works for you, it works.
Once you understand the mechanism, the evaluation gets simple. The audio itself is not exotic — the differences between products come down to production quality, session structure, whether the guidance helps you build the habit, and whether you can get your money back if it doesn't land.
